Last week part of the SSI team decided to peel our eyes from our computer screens and put down our mouses for a second and end the work week by packing up our cars and going camping!
From the get-go we faced some problems. We caught wind that there might be some heavy rain in the forecast so we were forced to change our plans of hiking deep into the woods and sleeping beneath a "Big Tree" to staying at a camp site closer to our cars in case an evacuation was in order. Also we opted to cut the excursion from two night to just one- but spirits remained high!
We ended up getting a late start; after a lengthy drive and maneuvering past a late night police checkpoint by a group of very bored law enforcers we reached the woods.
We spent a night and a day out in Bankhead National Forest in Moulton, AL enjoying the wilderness in the springtime- climbing cliffs, gathering firewood, and deciphering tent poles. We had some good laughs and the caves and waterfalls were something to remember.
The rain didn't end up spoiling our time and we seemed to escape the ticks and chiggers. Overall, it was great chance to get out of the office and hang with the people you don't normally get to outside of the hustle and bustle of everyday routine.
